Coach of the Decade - Robert Youngblood

Robert Youngblood was voted by his peers to win Mocorunning's Coach of the Decade Award. Coaches were asked to consider the coach who maximized performance of their athletes and excelled at the highest level of high school track & field. Youngblood won boys and girls track & field team state titles at two different schools during the decade. His Damascus teams won the 2010 boys indoor track state title and 2011 girls indoor track state title. He joined the Northwest track & field program in 2012. During his tenure at Northwest, Northwest won boys state titles during the indoor seasons of 2014 through 2018 and outdoor state titles in 2013 and 2016 through 2019. Northwest won the girls outdoor track state title in 2018. Northwest also won nine boys and seven girls indoor and outdoor county team titles plus nine boys and ten girls 4A West Regional team titles between 2012 and 2019. Northwest athletes and relays won more than double the number of individual county, region, and state titles compared to any other Montgomery County team during Youngblood's tenure.

"Youngblood managed an all-star coaching staff and helped athletes excel beyond expectation with unprecedented team success." -Seann Pelkey, Quince Orchard

"Youngblood works tirelessly to maximize his athletes' strengths." -Prasad Gerard, Poolesville

"Coach Youngblood is one of the most dedicated coaches to his athletes (on the field and off the field) I have ever met. Whether is it finding his athletes a place to run in college, purchasing them a pair of shoes, and filling their pantry with food because the family cannot afford to buy any. I have seen him take young men who have no father figures in their lives under his wing and teach them how to be young men of character." -Nate Parry, Northwest

"The Northwest program has repeatedly won county, region, and state championships with so many different classes and athletes. Even teams with vast talent and multiple standout athletes don't always win. It is up to the coach to utilize, grow, and manage that talent to have success and Youngblood has done that consistently." -Elrid Cason, Damascus

"He built upon the work of Beth Muehl and improved Northwest from a county powerhouse to a state powerhouse. The man works tirelessly to improve the performance of his athletes." Eric Da Silva, Einstein

"Impressed with the recruitment of athletes from his own school and then the development over time with them across all events." -Kellie Redmond, Wootton

"His record speaks for itself. Taking two separate teams to state titles is amazing." -Herb Tolbert, Gaithersburg

"Youngblood gets athletes to believe that accomplishing something collectively means more than any individual(s) success." -Gio Reumante, Northwood

"Nobody gets more out of his athletes than Robert." -Stephen Hays, Whitman

All-Decade Coaching Leadership Award - Seann Pelkey

Seann Pelkey was voted by his peers to win Mocorunning's All-Decade Coaching Leadership Award. Coaches were asked to consider the coach who contributed to the sport in meaningful ways that created or expanded opportunities for athletes to excel. Pelkey served as Maryland District 2 sports director for boys outdoor track and field from 2010 through 2018 and Maryland District 2 sports director for cross-country from 2013 through 2017. Pelkey hosted the Quince Orchard Cougar Relays throughout the decade and directed multiple 4A West Regional Meets.

"Seann has been the go-to coach for at least one decade if not two for any support the county may need. Seann is constantly mentoring younger coaches and providing these young folks with any information they may need. More seasoned coaches could follow his example and think more about the sport and less about themselves. He is a Jim Vollmer, only smaller." - Francis Parry, Northwest

"Seann dedicates his time both in-season and out-of-season to assist anyone with anything that he can. Whether it be letting them use his timing system for a dual meet or going to out-of-season meetings on behalf of all MCPS coaches, he goes above and beyond." -Elrid Cason, Damascus

"He has been on the State Committee and served as a meet director of some kind for the County/Region seemingly every year. That is a lot of time to give and sacrifice for his fellow coaches and the sport itself." - Eric Da Silva, Albert Einstein

"Coach Pelkey is filled with spirit, thoughtfulness, and he is always looking for another problem to fix, be it a meet or an event, etc." -Daniel Rose, Georgetown Prep

"Seann is extremely knowledgeable in and dedicated to the sport of track and field. He has respect from all coaches who know him and he would do anything to help a colleague." -Stephen Majkrzak, Quince Orchard

"Pelkey never hesitates to sacrifice coaching his team to make sure a meet is well-run." -Robert Burke, Clarksburg

All-Decade Team Selection Process

Mocorunning's Coaches of the Decade were selected through two rounds of voting. Montgomery County track & field coaches of 10+ years were invited to nominate up to five coaches in two categories: Coach of the Decade and Coaching Leadership. For the first category, coaches were asked to nominate coaches who maximized the performance of their athletes and excelled at the highest level of high school track & field. For the leadership category, coaches were asked to nominate coaches who rose above and beyond the typical duties of coaching, served in leadership roles on the local and state level, and contributed to the sport in meaningful ways that created or expanded opportunities for athletes to excel. The first round of voting narrowed the field to four finalists in each category. The second round of voting required coaches to vote for one single winner in each category.

Thank you for including Stephanie Davis in the decade team. It is a small typo but she is attending University of South Carolina not South Carolina State.
