Launching into National Prominence

Edit: Claudia has since improved her shot put mark to 45-10.75. She broke outdoor county meet records in the shot put and discus.

With a discus mark of 145-02 and shot put mark of 44-02.75 in the same day, Clarksburg's Claudia Ababio not only cemented herself as the greatest all-around female thrower in MoCo prep history, she made a statement to throwers around the nation that she is climbing the ranks.

The local significance is that she just threw 23 feet better than the current outdoor county championship meet record in the discus (122-08) and about 20 feet better than any MoCo athlete has ever thrown that we are aware of. The shot put mark is more than 4 feet better than the current county meet record of 40 feet even.

Both marks are top 20 in the nation according to Dyestat.com on 4/5/2014. Both marks would have ranked her among the top 3 Americans at Penn Relays in 2013. The discus and shot marks would have been 4th and 8th respectively at last year's New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

B-CC's Nora McUmber finished 48th at NXN in 18:23

B-CC Coach Chad Young on 2013 NXN Trip to Portland, Oregon: "I think the trip to compete at NXN was a great way for Nora to celebrate her successful season. She seemed to have such a good time socializing with the other high school runners and professional runners. This was her first time running against such elite high school competition and I thought it was a great experience for her. I am so proud of the way she competed and of her journey to earn a spot at this meet."

Jessie Rubin, Wootton Class of 2010; 2009 MD State Champ and NXN Qualifier: "Cold weather, mud, and hay bales aside- the toughest part about the NXN course is the competition itself, which brings mental toughness to a whole new level. You go from leading and controlling races to being lost in the frenzied mix of runners who are just as good as or better than you. Nora handled this adverse situation in stride. I'm so proud of her and all of her accomplishments this cross country season and am excited to see what she will do on the track!"

B-CC's Nora McUmber is the NXN Southeast Regional Champion: 17:34.3
(First Ever Regional Champion From Maryland, Third All-Time NXN Qualifier From MoCo)

The NXN Southeast regional has been hosted in Cary, North Carolina since 2008. After Nora McUmber scored the first ever NXN regional victory for a Maryland athlete, it's worth taking a look back at Maryland's top ten finishers in the last six years. Did you know that twice as many Maryland girls finished in the top ten this year than in the previous five years combined?

The predecessor to NXN, Nike Cross Nationals, was NTN, Nike Team Nationals. Originally teams were voted to the NTN championship based on a panel of "experts." In 2007, the first ever NTN regional races were hosted all over the country with the top two teams qualifying for the championship race from each region. Individuals were not permitted to enter the race without a team, and competitors did not qualify for the NTN championship individually. The following year, the meet changed to its current format and the southeast regional race moved from Hoover, Alabama to its current location in Cary, NC.

Notable Maryland NTN Southeast Regional finishers in 2007:
Year Place	Name M/F	School Time
    2007	4	Louise Hannallah F	Churchill 19:01.7

    2007	7	Neal Darmody M	Quince Orchard 16:18.2

Poolesville's Chase Weaverling is the first male athlete since 1998 (Jarrett Van Tine, B-CC) to win two (2) Montgomery County XC titles and a state XC title.

A young and motivated Walter Johnson squad wins its first state title since 1999 and its first ever in the 4A classification.

  • In the event of a tie, the team that has defeated the other team(s) with which it is tied will be the champion.
  • If there is still a tie, then the tie will be broken by the lowest combined points scored in division meets.
  • If a tie still remains, the largest combined margin of victory among the teams that are tied will be used.
