Good Counsel Boys Highlight Performances at Penn Relays

In a year in which we have seen record books re-written time and time again in relay events, it is only fitting that the Penn Relays would hold in store several unprecedented breakthrough performances

  • Good Counsel Boys clocked the fastest times in the 4x100 (43.75) and 4x400 (3:16.87) and won the distance medley relay championship of America (10:09.07). The 4x400 and DMR times are the fastest by a county team since at least 2000. Watch DMR Race Video to see Thomas Tallerico, Cortlandt Harris, Fola Shokunbi, and Kyle Graves execute a perfect race. • Thor Serafenas of Good Counsel threw 173-01 to place fourth in the discus, shy of his personal best by three inches, but still a further mark than any other county athlete has thrown in atleast ten years.
  • Georgetown Prep easily won its heat of the 4x800 prelims in 7:49.75 and then gave a superb effort to finish third in the Championship of America in 7:43.76. It is most likely the fastest 4x800 by a Montgomery County team ever - certainly in the last 10+ years. The Penn Relays website had the following splits: Russell Hornsby (1:55.7), Nick Letourneau (1:55.3), Joseph Chapin (2:01.4), Joseph Woiwode (1:51.4). Woiwode left it all on the track in an effort to bring his team from behind and win the race. The 4x800 Championship of America Video is another must see for MoCo Fans. Walter Johnson clocked 7:50.22 to place eighth.
  • The Northwest girls broke out with a 9:08.74 4x800 relay in the prelims and then clocked 9:08.47 to place sixth in the Championship of America. It was sixteen seconds faster than the state champions' fastest indoor time. It is likely the fastest time ever run by a county team. Northwest had the following splits in the prelims according to the Penn Relays website: Olivia Ekpone (2:17.7), India Knight (2:14.3), Alyssa Henshaw (2:18.9), Britt Eckerstrom (2:18.8), and the following splits in the finals: Olivia Ekpone (2:15.78), India Knight (2:17.00), Alyssa Henshaw (2:21.24), Britt Eckerstrom (2:14.45) Girls 4x800 Championship of America Race Video Prelim Video
  • Wootton clocked 9:19.01 to place seventh in the prelim 4x800. Jessie Rubin split 2:15. Only this year's Northwest team and the Whitman teams of 2007 and 2008 have ever run faster among Montgomery County teams.
  • The Northwest girls clocked 3:51.85 in the 4x400 Relay. In the last ten years, only last year's Northwest team consisting of the same four girls has run faster. 4x400 Race Video
  • Thea LaFond of Kennedy jumped 40-07 to place third in the triple jump. It was the best jump by a Montgomery County athlete in atleast ten years.
  • The Churchill girls clocked the fastest 4x100 time of the season with a 49.15.
