Brendan Etzel of Richard Montgomery has signed to run track with Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). IUP is a Division II school about an hour east of Pittsburgh.
This past indoor season, Brendan was the county, region, and 4A state champion in the 300-meter dash. He finished the indoor season ranked in the top 5 in the nation in the 300 with his season best time of 34.47. He has competed on multiple state champion relay teams and has helped his team to win the past five indoor and outdoor county titles. Above, he is pictured with Richard Montgomery head track coach Matt Wheeler.

Leslie Morrison of Whitman High School will attend Duke University in the fall. Leslie has racked up nine individual county titles in her high school career, including three consecutive indoor 500-meter county titles and five consecutive indoor and outdoor 800-meter county titles. She has won an outdoor 800-meter state title in a personal best 2:14.02 and an outdoor state title this year in the 1600 in a personal best 5:04.59. She hopes to focus on the 1500 in college.

Louise Hannallah of Churchill High School signed with Vanderbilt University to run cross country and track. Louise has been one of the top runners in Maryland for four years. She has won two county titles in the 3200m run with a personal record of 11:06. She finished in the top 5 in each of the last 3 cross country county and state championship meets. She was recently named to the Washington Post All-Met cross country team and was named Maryland's Gatorade Athlete of the Year for the 2007 cross country season.

Morgane Gay of Whitman High School signed with the University of Virginia to run cross country and track. Morgane first started running at an elite level in her sophomore year on Whitman's nationally ranked 4x800m relay and DMR. She came on very strong in her junior year when she smashed the county cross country course record and was later named a Washington Post All-Met athlete. She went on to win numerous country, region, and state titles in the 1600m run with a personal record of 4:55. This fall she again broke her county course cross country record and was named a repeat All-Met athlete.

Erin McManus of Churchill High School will be joining her teammate Louise Hannallah for four more years at Vanderbilt University beginning next fall. As Vanderbilt recruited Louise, it did not take long for them to realize that there would be a place on the roster for Erin as well. She tore up cross country courses last fall with a personal best time of 18:43. She was fifth at the county championship and eighth at the state championship. She also recently placed 2nd in the county in the 3200-meter run with a personal best time of 11:23.

Louis Varella will be attending Jackson State University in Jackson Mississippi this fall. Louis was accepted into Jackson States Honors College, where he will major in Biology with a concentration in Physical Therapy.

Louis was also awarded a track scholarship to run for the Division I Blue Tigers. He developed along with his teammates at Blair to form some of the fastest sprint relays this county has ever seen. Despite some injuries in his high school career, he finished his senior year with county and regional titles in the 400-meter dash and the fastest 400-meter time of mocorunning.com's three year history at 48.48.

Damascus Hornets Drew Daggan and Amanda Zyzak have committed to join the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets, an NCAA Division III team located in Waynesburg, PA about an hour south of Pittsburgh. Drew has risen to become a state level competitor in the throwing events this year. Amanda does it all for Damascus and will do the heptathlon and cross country in college.

Wil Zahorodny has signed with UNC Wilmington to compete in cross country and track and major in marine biology. UNC Wilmington is an NCAA Division I school which competes in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). This past indoor season, Wil set the county and state records in the 500-meter dash, at one point running the fastest time in the nation at that distance. He also helped his 3200-meter relay team break the 3A state record. He was named the 2008 Washington Post Indoor Track All-Met Athlete of the Year.
Elisabeth Warren of Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac, Maryland recently selected for the 2008 All Gazette 1st Track Team member has signed a National Letter of Intent and will attend Fordham University in New York City on track scholarship. Fordham is a D-1 program that competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference in all sports except football which they play in the Patriot League. Elisabeth will compete in the 100, 200, 400, Long Jump and possibly the Triple Jump at Fordham. She is part of highly recruited incoming class.

Elisabeth is a 4 time All-ISL Selection and the 2008 Long Jump Champion. She holds three school records in the 100 (12.25); 200 (25.62), Long Jump (17'2.25) and ran 58.33 in the 400 meters. She was a starter on Holy Child's varsity soccer and basketball teams and a member of the National Honor Society. Elisabeth is one of eight seniors from the 2008 senior class of 80 students that will compete at the D - 1 level from Holy Child.

Rachel Karanian of Connelly School of the Holy Child has signed to play soccer and run track for Loyola College of Baltimore. Rachel is a All-ISL Track and Soccer selection and 2008 All Met Honorable Mention in soccer. Rachel is member of Holy Child school record relay teams - 4 X 100 (50.21), 4 X 200 (1:46.53) and 4 x 400 (4:06.43). She is an ISL 400 and 200 meter finalist and has run 59.23 and 26.61 in the 400 and 200 meters respectively. In recognition of her talent, Loyola has agreed to her competing in both sports. While at Holy Child, Rachel was a multi-sport athlete competing in soccer, varsity swimming and track. She holds the school record of most goals in a season (22) and will play for Loyola which is two time MAAC soccer champions. The Greyhounds have the top D-1 women's program in Maryland and have made the NCAA Women's soccer tournament the last two years.
